Council Member John Byrkit

Council Member John Byrkit was born and raised in Decatur, Illinois. He attended Millikin University in Decatur and Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.

He joined the Kmart Corporation (S.S. Kresge Company) after college. With each promotion, he moved to a different part of the country. He served as International Buyer and Category Manager (Market Development Manager).  Friendly people and beautiful rivers and lakes drew John to Kingston for retirement after 35 years in retail. He began a new career in finance as a mortgage loan officer.

John’s past affiliation includes the Chamber of Commerce in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Yuba City, California, Casper, Wyoming, and Kingston. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Home Owners’ Associations in Troy, Michigan and Kingston. He has volunteered his time as a Cub Scout leader and as an Assistant Scoutmaster for Boy Scouts of America. He was an active participant with the Women’s Council of Realtors in Knoxville.  John is currently the President of the Roane County Habitat for Humanity.

John has been married over 35 years to Carla, has three children, and three grandchildren.
